Unearth – ‘The March’

It’s been 7 years since I first started paying attention to Unearth. They came exploding onto my scene with the rockin but poorly produced ‘Stings Of Conscience’ (in 2001, duh), and immediately cemented themselves as a band I’d be paying attention to as the years went on. Ok so with that out of the way, here’s my deal with Unearth. They’re good at what they do, I like the songs, I like the vocals, I like the breakdowns when they choose to do them..but here’s the thing. EVERY SINGLE Unearth song is EXACTLY the same. They have their sound and their niche, and nothing ever ever ever ever ever changes from release to release (although for some reason their last cd, aside from a few songs, did nothing for me..maybe it was the lack of Adam D-ness behind the production boards), and ‘The March’ is nothing different. Any of these songs could be on any of their other records, and that could be good or bad depending on your viewpoint of the band. Personally, I don’t mind it all that much. Like each other release, amongst all the sameness, most songs are pretty decent, a few that are badass (My Will Be Done & We Are Not Anonymous), and a few tunes that seem like halfassed filler. But I guess I just described almost every record that comes out nowadays. Ah well. I ultimately do enjoy this cd to an extent; Unearth is one of those bands that’s great for the shuffle feature on the iPod, that way you can hear a song or two, rock out for a second, and be on your merry way.
