#33 – God Grew Tired of Us: The Story of Lost Boys of Sudan

God Grew Tired Poster

Well hot damn, a documentary has made it on my top 2007 films list.  It is the first, but will it be the last? o_0  I absolutely loved this film. (I do have a soft spot for documentaries) The reason I enjoyed it so much (aside from said reason) is because there was no hint of influence or bias. In fact, I loved it because it shows the viewer (i.e. guy in recliner, with your plasma, and your beer and popcorn, with your AC cranked on, and your fully stocked kitchen, with you bad ass GT convertible parked out in the garage, and you lovely wife, and two kids in prep school, with you Yale degree and kick ass job as a business consultant) just how much we probably take everything for granted.

GOOD POINTS – non-biased, eye-opening, SUNDANCE WINNER!!!! !!!!

BAD POINTS – narrated by Nicole Kidman (j/k.), there really aren’t any substantially horrible                                                 things. Ok, it’s a documentary.

I cannot imagine coming from the Sudan, a place where war and genocide ravage the countryside, and adjust to living in the US. In God Grew Tired of Us, four boys are privileged to be selected to come to the US to make new lives. However, in doing this they are forced to leave their families and adjust to a new culture. The utter culture shock they go through is indescribable. For example, imagine not know how indoor plumbing, electricity, refrigerators work. Heck, imagine the joy of going into a grocery store; after you have only been eating grains and water for your entire life. That fact alone is utterly mind-blowing.

This film is remarkable, and truly reminds me why I should be happy. And in the process, it reminds me that there are a lot of people out there that need help.  Not only that, there are a lot of people out there more than willing to give everything they’ve got their lives better, if only given the shot. It’s truly unbelievable.
