Waitress

#29 -

Hey! It’s a quirky dramedy about a girl young waitress/pie maker that gets preggers by her abusive hubby. Sound familiar to anyone? If not, after this countdown is done; you all will have noticed a common theme. Despite these common themes of quirkiness and pregnancy; Waitress is a stand out film. However, it’s unfortunately, Adrienne Shelly’s opus; AND her last film. Shelly’s script, direction, and understated performances make Waitress a rather good and interesting flick

Good Points –Quirky, Solid Script, Ensemble (Everyone in this film gives it 110%)

Bad Points – Tainted by Shelly’s untimely death, Corny pie gimmick

First, there aren’t many negatives about this film. If you love quirky, dry, subtle dramedies; then you’re probably enjoy this film. And if you’re anything like me, the inclusion of Nathan Fillion will motivate you to watch. Even though, Andy Griffith and Adrienne Shelly’s (yes, she co-stars) performances stand out more than the others.  Not to mention, Kerri Russell’s Jenna is a decent anchor that pulls some Felicity charm into this flick.

Honestly, Shelly’s homicide isn’t truly a bad point to this film. However, do to that, the film has a soft spot in my heart. I cannot describe how depressing it is to finish them film and as it goes to credits; “In Memory” pops up on the screen. I mean, you’ve just invested 90mins of your laugh watching a feel-good story that was written, directed, and co-starred a murder victim. And not just that, she was violently taken from us BEFORE the movie was even released. Seriously. WTF.

Oh, and about the pie gimmick. I just only have room for one pie gimmick in my life. And as of now, that space belongs to Pushing Daisies (cheap plug).
